The city of Geneva, perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, does not have a reputation as a party town; in fact, quite the opposite. It is a relatively quiet city and it can be pricey for visitors, but the many local attractions make it a city worth visiting, if only for a day.
Many tourists arrive in Geneva by rail from France; the European train system is excellent and comfortable, and it's a pleasure to watch the countryside roll past. The picturesque city, situated at the south-east end of the lake, has a history that dates to Roman times.
Geneva's Old Town occupies a high spot overlooking the Rhone River. A guided walking tour will take you to hidden delights - courtyards, fountains, and lovely squares. Climb the 157 steps to the top of the north tower of the Cathedral St. Pierre and look out over the city and the lake. At the centre of Old Town, you'll find the Place du Bourg-de-Four, a historic square that has long been a centre of commerce in the city.
You'll find plenty of sight-seeing opportunities, and some venues that you really should make an effort to visit, including the Jet d'Eau (water fountain) and the Flower Clock. The lakefront area is lovely, and a number of parks and beaches dot the shoreline. Many visitors enjoy a cruise on the lake: you can enjoy an hour along the shore or sign on for a gourmet cruise in the evening.
If you are interested in international affairs, you might be interested in a couple of sites. The Palais des Nations was once the headquarters of the United Nations, and the United Nations Refugee Agency is still housed in Geneva. And the European Organization for Nuclear Research (the acronym CERN reflects the French name: Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire). This facility is the world's largest centre for physics research and is home to particle accelerators and detectors.
