The most prominent landmarks are the cathedral and the royal palace. Like so many cathedrals in Spain, the lovely Seo is built on the site of a mosque. It is clearly visible to everyone who approaches the city by sea. The cathedral's primary facade overlooks the Almudaina Palace.

The Palacio de la Almudaina was built by Moorish conquerors outside the city, on a hill that overlooks the bay. The circular Castel de Bellvar sits on a hill near Palma; built in the 14th century, it was used as a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Many visitors want nothing more than to sit in the sun on one of Mallorca's beaches. Either way, visitors will find food and drink in abundance, as well as clubs for dancing.

The Royal Carthusian Monastery at Valldemossa provided refuge for lovers Frederic Chopin and George Sand in 1838. The old monastery is no longer used by monks, but visitors are welcome to walk through the gardens and explore the buildings.

The name of the game in Manacor is cultured pearls. The city produces some truly lovely specimens.

Mallorca isn't all city, however. Many visitors enjoy the island's northwest coast with its olive groves, beautiful mountains and rugged coastline.
