The sparkling waters of the Mediterranean beckon visitors to the Spanish city of Malaga, found on the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain. Founded by the Phoenicians, the city's warm and sunny climate, coupled with long stretches of gorgeous beaches, make Malaga an ideal holiday destination.

The 3,000 year old city boasts an ancient association with Phonecians, Greeks, Romans and Moors, and each culture left its imprint on the area. The Phoenicians built a fortress overlooking Malaga, and the Moors left a castle below the fortress.

Arguably the most well-know native son of Malaga is the modern artist Pablo Picasso. He left Spain for Paris in 1904, but his legacy lives on in the Museo Picasso, housed in the Buenavista Palace. The collection contains 155 works that span the artist's career.

La Alcazaba, a fortress dating to the year 700, dominates the architectural landscape. Surrounded by delightful gardens and fountains, the palace inside the fortress is home to the Archaeological Museum. The ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, which is being rebuilt, sits just below the fortress on the hill, and it is well worth a visit.

Construction on Malaga's magnificent cathedral began in the 16th century and continued until the 18th. The Iglesia del Sagrana, adjacent to the cathedral, sits on the site of a Moorish mosque. The interior of the church is splendid.

When the sightseeing is finished, many tourists find a seat in one of the city's many restaurants, tapas bars and bodegas. Malaga is known for its fantastic tapas; some of the best spots are hidden away, and they're well worth finding.
