South of Valencia on Spain's Mediterranean coast, partway down the Costa Blanca, sits Alicante, one of the oldest cities in Spain. This lovely spot can has a past that dates back more than 2,000 years to the days of the Roman legions. In fact, the city was once known by its Latin name, "Lucentum," or, "City of Light."

The bustling city is a delightful place. Imposing homes built in the 18th century are scattered throughout, evidence of past wealth and splendor. The Calle de Labradores is home to two of the finest, Berenguer de Marquina and Maisonnave.

The Castillo de Santa Barbara, on Benacantil Hill, has a commanding view of the city from the north. Visitors can reach the castle by road or purchase a trip on the "lift" that departs from Jovellanas Avenue.

Alicante's oldest church, Iglesia de Santa Maria, was built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the foundations of a Moorish mosque. Other historical sites beckon those who would know more of the past. Not far from the Town Hall, you'll find the Catedral de San Nicolas de Bari; further up in the hills is the Chapel of Santa Cruz.

Visitors and locals alike enjoy a walk around the harbor with its many cafes. The island of Tabarca is only a few miles away, and the ferry takes people out for day trips and weekend getaways. The island has a fascinating history that combines elements from Italy and Tunisia, as well as Spain.

Alicante has gorgeous beaches; Playa San Juan isn't far from the city, and it offers plenty of amenities to make your visit a fun one.
