The Italian city of Pisa, located in Tuscany between the Mediterranean Sea to the west and the city of Florence to the east, has long been a favoured destinations for travellers. The surrounding countryside is lovely and wild, and a short trip brings the visitor to the coast.

Nearly everyone knows the infamous Leaning Tower, which is actually the bell tower for the Cathedral. Construction started on the tower in 1173, and it took nearly 200 years to complete. Designed to be a vertical structure, when it was finished, it leaned. Visitors can climb to the top of the circular Tower for a stunning view of the city.

Pisa is equally proud of the Duomo and its Gothic Baptistery. The white marble Duomo is the city's cathedral. Built in the latter half of the 11th century, the building is designed in Romanesque style. Much of the building was taken from earlier Roman structures. Nearby, the Camposani, known as the Holy Field, is considered one of the world's loveliest cemeteries.

Pisa is one of Tuscany's many citta di arte (cities of art); a visit to all the museums may be nearly overwhelming. The National Museum of St. Matthew, the Lungarno Simonelli Museum, and the Cathedral Works Museum are home to a spectacular collection of archaeological treasures and ecclesiastical art.

When cultural overload threatens, the visitor can spend a day on the beach or hire a boat and explore the islands of Elba, Giglia, and Capraia.

For more stunning architecture, travel to the nearby fortified town of Lucca, which boasts several magnificent Romanesque churches.
